About me

I'm a lawyer from Pasto (a city close to Ecuador) who has been living in Bogotá since 1998 and who loves this city for all the things it has to offer. I like to travel and meet new cultures so I think I have an idea of what a traveler wants when he/she goes somewhere and that's what I'd like to offer, experiences, to see the city like if you live there but without losing the capacity to amaze yourself. I consider myself friendly, patient, easy going and being the first local friend in Bogotá has giving me the opportunity to meet great people whom I consider my friends and I even have had the chance to meet some of them at their countries, pretty cool uh?

City's Tips & Traps

  • Image

    Mercado de las pulgas

Like most flea markets around the world, craftsmans and entrepeneurs meet here to sell things you would only find there: from food and exotic fruits to clothes, art, antiques... The market at this part of the city is the "high class" one, so the prices won't be cheap - but not expensive either. As you walk around, you'll see street musicians, vendors, storytellers etc, so it's all an experience.
  • Image

    Calle de los zapatos

It's a whole street where you'll find all kind of traditional shoe stores, most of them "made in Colombia" out of pure leather, all styles, a little cheaper than at the malls, with good quality and not known for tourists.
  • Image

    Downtown

Since the carrera 7, from the "Plaza de Bolívar" to the 24 street is pedestrian, street vendors take advantage to offer all kind of stuff and it becomes a kind of a street carnival with musicians, storytellers, hand made mini Roller coasters, etc. I'll advise visitors to NOT got by yourselves because vendors will charge you more for whatever you like and also it can be a not so safe area.

    Fast food

If you like fast food with a local touch of the place you are visiting, Bogotá has been specializing in delicious and different kind of hamburguers: El Corral, Home burgers, Sierra Nevada, la Burguesería... I'd recomend you to try "El Corral Gourmet" in La Candelaria, with a terrace with a good view of the historic center.
  • Image

    Alimentarte

It's a gastronomy festival that takes place in a nice park of Bogotá, with the congregation of some of the best Colombian restaurants and an invited country so you can order from them and eat in the park enjoying fresh air, music, people all around, some shows, etc. It's very popular and the money collected goes to the widows and orphans of polices death in combat.
  • Image

    Plaza de Paloquemao

Market plaza of the most fresh and delicious fruits and flowers mainly - but you can also find craftsmanships, food, cookware sold directly from their producers. You can also see and taste vegetables you might not know and drink delicious natural juices made right there in front of you, and watch some of the Colombia's countryside people.
  • Image

    Gaira Café

Everybody talks about "Andrés Carne de Res" to eat and party; but this is another great place to eat typical Colombian north coast food and party with live good music - and is not that known to tourists, but I can assure you will have lots of fun. Bad thing is that is hard to get in, you need a long time reservation and, regarding prices, is pretty much like "Andrés".
  • Image

    Ciclovía

On Sundays and holidays, the main streets are closed to cars, so the space becomes exclusive to people: bikes, scooters, people walking and running, skaters and so. You can also find fresh orange juice along the way and some aerobic shows in some parts of the city; it's fun, healthy and free!
  • Image

    Zona rosa

Exclusive area where you can find Colombian expensive designers like Silvia Tcherassi, Lina Cantillo, Jhoana Ortiz, Bettina Spitz among the international ones (Dolce and Gabana, Ferragamo, Armani, etc); high class malls and some chic restaurants and bars (like Andrés Carne de Res). But not everything is expensive around here, you can also find fast food and, retail chain clothing brands also.

    Tren turístico de la Sabana

It's a traditional train that goes to some of the countryside area close to Bogotá, while a "papayera" plays music and people sell typical food such as chocolate, tamal, almojábanas, etc. It has some stops at the main attractions: La Catedral de Sal-Zipaquirá o Mina de Nemocón y goes to Cajicá to have lunch. It's an all day activity to see not only Bogotá but the places around.

Tell us, how was your experience with this friend.

Write about your own experiences guiding as a Local Friend. You can write these on your own voice, relating the unique experiences you were able to give who was traveling with you. Example: "Last week, I guided a traveler from Spain who wanted to experience the city beyond the main attractions. We started with a quiet morning at a small coffee shop only locals know, then wandered through a street art alley where I could share the stories behind each mural. They told me it was their favorite part of the trip because it felt like discovering a secret side of the city, one they would have never found alone."
