A plate of carnita frita lands on a roadside table, and the people sharing it may be heading opposite ways on the Duarte highway. Bonao grew as the halfway stop between Santo Domingo and Santiago, where travelers sat down to eat, so lunch here has long mixed locals with people passing through.
Away from the highway, the Plaza de la Cultura wears its mosaics, and the hills hide the cold pools of Saltos de Jima. It stays warm and humid all year, with the heaviest rain in May and from August to November. A Local Friend can show you their own barrio, from their breakfast corner to the street where their carnival group practices.
