Merengue leaks out of a corner colmado radio, and someone's aunt starts dancing between the plastic chairs. Music sets the mood here all day long. In the Zona Colonial, son and bachata bounce off coral-stone walls, and along the Malecón the sea breeze carries a different song from every parked car.
Beyond the old town, leafy Gazcue keeps its stone houses and family restaurants, and on winter nights Estadio Quisqueya roars for baseball. The climate stays warm all year, with drier days from December to April and more showers the rest of the year. A Local Friend can pull up a chair for you at a family-run spot or a sidewalk table where the dominoes never stop clacking.
