The Tapi swings wide on its last stretch to the Arabian Sea, and its old bank still holds the stone bastions of Surat Castle. Ships from Arabia, Europe and Southeast Asia once anchored here, and their merchants left the city a taste for trade and good food. At Dumas Beach, families walk the black sand at sunset with plates of hot bhajiya.
Inland, evenings gather around Gopi Talav, an old lake ringed with food stalls, while Rander keeps its Ramzan kitchens. Winters are dry and mild, and the monsoon soaks the city from June to September. A Local Friend can turn castle, lake and beach into a day that makes sense, ending at sunset by the sea.
