Morning joggers circle the lawns of IIT Roorkee, where a white domed building looks ready for a class photo. A short walk away, the Ganges Canal slides through town past crowded bridges and market stalls, and the two halves of Roorkee seem to keep different clocks, one set to lecture bells, the other to traffic and trade.
Out past the old army cantonment, the canal crosses the Solani valley on brick arches, and the dargah at Piran Kaliyar draws pilgrims from across India. Summers run hot, the monsoon soaks June to September, and winter brings cool, clear mornings. A Local Friend tells you when to reach the canal early and when to linger by the water as the light fades.
