Pilgrims crowd the steps and footbridges of Har Ki Pauri at dusk, while a cable car hums up the Shivalik slope to the Mansa Devi temple, sparing walkers a 3 km trail. In July, Kanwar pilgrims fill the roads on foot, balancing pots of Ganges water on bamboo poles for the long walk home.
Beyond the ghats, Kankhal keeps its old ashrams and havelis with painted walls, and the forests of Rajaji National Park begin just outside town. Summers run hot, the monsoon soaks July to September, and winter mornings turn chilly. A Local Friend keeps the plan loose enough that a dawn dip can turn into a cable car ride, a kachori breakfast or an afternoon among Kankhal's ashrams.
