City's Tips & Traps

    Trajineras

Located in the South of Mexico CIty, you can rent a small boat called "trajinera", traditionally decorated to explore around the channels once essential since it's pre-hispanic origins. Nowadays it's a touristic spot great to discover traditional food, drinks, listen to mariachi or just have a look at. It has a haunted spot if you are feeling daring! The house of its endemic species AXOLOTL!

    Mexican Wrestling!!

The best and more traditional venue of original Mexican Wrestling!! It's actually a lot of fun and if you pick a wrestler - buy the tickets that same day at the ticket office (unless you buy them in advance for a special fight or so). Try to avoid street sellers. There are parking lots nearby but the best option is to get there by uber/taxi and leave after the event.

    Museums' Nights!

Night's Museums takes place once a month after-hours. This is a night in which the best museums open freely with special event's and expositions, considerin that Mexico CIty only has more that 150 museums and galleries... it's a very special night!

    Marquesa

This is an open space close to Mexico City where you can enjoy nature to the fullest. You can rent a motor bike, horse, fish your own trout, pick a place to have a nice barbecue with friends or family or bring your dogs for a nice walk. Depending on what you're looking for it can go from free to medium. You can bring your own food and stuff or pick a place to get the best "quesadillas".

    Taxi trap!

A lot of the public taxis have the taximeter fixed up or take you through the long way to charge you more. My advice: ALWAYS know where you're going and, if you must take one, make sure it keeps on wide streets and only for short distances. Follow your gut, if you feel like getting off, GET OFF at a stop sign and once you're out, pay the fee. (Options: uber, cabify, hotel taxi, tours..)

Leave the city without getting far away from it

National park less than an hr away from the city, it has a historic former convent in the middle of the woods, great cheap Mexican dishes and is a great place to trail run. You can spend the whole morning wandering surrounded by tall beautiful trees getting to tour where silent monks found a perfect spot to honor their silent vow. Outside you can buy tacos, quesadillas and great coffee.

    Bike Mexico CIty off

Every Sunday one of the main ave. of the City closes to cars and only for bikes. The route goes through the most historical places, restaurants, museums, etc. You can rent (by day, week, year), or borrow a bike for for 3 hrs. BUT if you're feeling bold, you can bike through the city at any time, just look out for the cars, they say that if you can drive in Mexico City, you can drive anywhere!

    It's all about the food!

No matter what you're in mood for, Mexico CIty has it!! Any kind of restaurant, vegan, kosher, Indian, Colombian, for children, street food, any budget, romantic, with a view... and of course MEXICAN starting on tacos which we have LOTS of types. you just have to know where to go... it may be overwhelming but just check out your sources. A TIP: Get ready for SPICY, YET DELICIOUS!

    Solo traveler?

Let's get real, Mexico CIty is not the safest place on Earth but that doesn't mean you can't have the best time of your life, you just have to know how tor travel, and what to look out for. Like everywhere in he world, Don't wander alone at night, always be aware of your surroundings, always inform someone your schedule for the day, locate your Embassy... male solo, female solo, let's chat!

Tell us, how was your experience with this friend.

Write about your own experiences guiding as a Local Friend. You can write these on your own voice, relating the unique experiences you were able to give who was traveling with you. Example: "Last week, I guided a traveler from Spain who wanted to experience the city beyond the main attractions. We started with a quiet morning at a small coffee shop only locals know, then wandered through a street art alley where I could share the stories behind each mural. They told me it was their favorite part of the trip because it felt like discovering a secret side of the city, one they would have never found alone."
