City's Tips & Traps

Maracatu Workshop from "Bloco de Pedra" group.

Take part in an open rehearsal from a music group that plays "Maracatu", a typical Afro-Brazilian rhythm. Visitors are allowed to play any percussion instrument they choose or dance to any song. Can't do this stuff? Don't mind! Members from the group teach you how to play or dance! Get to know Brazilian culture by drumming on percussive instruments, dancing and meeting new people.

Ilú Obá de Min open rehearsals

"Ilú Obá de Min" is the name of a well-known Afro carnival block in SP. We are currently having open rehearsals on weekends for 2017 carnival! They'll start this year by January 14th and will continue until February 19th. You may watch us on Saturdays, playing on "Anhangabaú" Valley, right below the "Chá" Bridge. On Sundays, we play on "Patriarca" square. Both places are near from each other!

    "É di Santo" open rehearsals

Learn how to play some Afro-Brazilian rhythms in an Afro carnival block from south zone of Sao Paulo. Take part in any of "É di Santo" rehearsals and learn how to play a percussion instrument or even dance some Afro rhythms. Take this great opportunity to get to know Brazilian folk culture and meet new people!

    Centro Cultural Rio Verde

This is an awesome place to dance, have some drinks and meet people! There are lot of interesting events happening there, and usually for reasonable prices. For instance, there is an event called "Samba do Sol", which is totally for free and features live performances and "samba" music. It's a nice place to listen and dance to Brazilian music and hang out.

    LAPEJU

A very small but cozy place to dance and listen to some nice Brazilian music. The entrance is quite cheap - women pay R$ 7 and men pay R$ 15. Drinks are also cheap, and the staff is outgoing and kind. A cheap but great option for the weekend!

    Discopédia party at Trackers

"Trackers" is the venue that hosts a lot of parties, and Discopédia is the best party they have! Featuring hip-hop, soul, r&b, funk, and all other kinds of International and Brazilian Black music. The entrance fee is very cheap - men pay R$10, while women pay only R$ 5, but the 50 women who arrive first should pay nothing. The vinyl DJ's are awesome!

    Estadão bar & lanches

One of the best places to eat in São Paulo, for sure! You can stop by this place any time of the day, any day of the week - it's 24 hours open! So, if you are hungry at 3 in the morning, don't worry, stop by "Estadão" and eat a roast pork sandwich or a typical rice & beans Brazilian dish. Also, the prices are quite cheap and the service is very fast, so you won't wait too long to have your meal!

    Casa das Caldeiras

This is a MUST GO place in Sao Paulo. It looks like an old big factory, and it really was! Its structure was formerly risen to serve as an energy plant for the former Mr. Matarazzo (a rich Brazilian businessman) industries. A lot of cool events are hosted there every weekend, and they're usually for free. Stay tuned on their facebook page for upcoming events: facebook.com/casadascaldeiras/

    SESC Pompéia

This is a very cool cultural centre located in Pompéia, not far from Barra Funda subway station. Its structure resembles a big old factory made of brickwork. It features different kinds of cheap and even free activities, ranging from concerts to ceramic classes. There's a great place to watch concerts, called "Comedoria" - you can have a beer or eat tasty snacks while listening some great music.

    Matilha Cultural

A great venue to enjoy some art, music, culture and take your pet - yes, your pet! There are lot of cool events happening there for a very fair price! Movie sessions, art exhibitions, jazz live sessions, garage sales, pet adoption events, music gigs and much more. Stay tuned on their official website, as well as their Facebook page for upcoming events: https://www.facebook.com/matilhacultural/

Tell us, how was your experience with this friend.

Write about your own experiences guiding as a Local Friend. You can write these on your own voice, relating the unique experiences you were able to give who was traveling with you. Example: "Last week, I guided a traveler from Spain who wanted to experience the city beyond the main attractions. We started with a quiet morning at a small coffee shop only locals know, then wandered through a street art alley where I could share the stories behind each mural. They told me it was their favorite part of the trip because it felt like discovering a secret side of the city, one they would have never found alone."
