Base yourself in Pocitos or Punta Carretas, not the old town

About this tip

Good districts to sleep in are Parque Rodó, Punta Carretas and Pocitos, near the Rambla, beaches and shopping. Ciudad Vieja is excellent by day, but outside its pedestrian area it is considered unsafe after dark, and the UK government advises avoiding isolated places and walking alone downtown or near the port at night. If you stay in the old town, take a taxi or ride-hailing car back after dinner.
