The only high ground for miles is a low limestone ridge on the flat Indus plain, and Hyderabad was built on top of it. Pacco Qillo, the old brick fort, still crowns it, and the lanes below tilt up and down as they spill into Shahi Bazaar. On older rooftops, a few wind catchers still lean into the breeze.
Beyond the fort, the blue-tiled Talpur tombs stand calm behind their walls, bangles glitter by the thousand in Churi Para, and Bombay Bakery's coffee cake sells out early. Winters are warm and dry, while summers scorch until the evening winds arrive. A Local Friend pulls up a chair for you at a family table you would never find alone.
