Winter ducks from beyond the Himalayas settle on the Nawabganj wetland each year. On Unnao's western edge the Ganges slides past Shuklaganj, the twin town facing Kanpur across the water. Further south the river bends past Baksar and the village of Pariyar, where legend places Sita's years of exile.
Away from the water, Unnao is a working town of tanneries and quilt dyers. Out on the Rae Bareli road, Badarka still keeps a gateway built by a Mughal court official. Summers are fiercely hot, the monsoon soaks July to September, and winters turn cool. A Local Friend can turn those scattered stops into a day that makes sense, with river, birds and town in the right order.
