A train horn rolls over the Lower Ganga Canal at Rura, on the Delhi–Howrah line. In Akbarpur the soundtrack is older: local lore says the town was once called Gudaikhera for the singing and drumming of its people. Nearby, the domed pavilions of Shukla Talab, a Mughal-era pond, sit mirrored in still water.
Country roads lead to temple villages like Banipara, home of Waneshwar Mahadev, and south to Musanagar, where the old Mughal Road runs close to the Yamuna. Summers are fiercely hot, the monsoon arrives in late June and winter can bring frost. A Local Friend can lead you through a gate you would never have tried, into a village fair or a family courtyard.
