South of town the flat plain suddenly breaks into the Chambal ravines, a maze of earth gullies and scrubby ridges tumbling toward the river. They are the closest thing Etawah has to mountains, and the tall, long-eared Jamunapari goat was bred on these slopes. Nearby, lions live at Etawah Safari Park, and the Yamuna and Chambal meet a short drive away.
Beyond the ravines, sarus cranes stalk the shallow Sarsai Nawar wetland, and Etawah Junction sends trains toward Delhi and Kolkata. Summers are fierce and dry, the monsoon arrives in July, and winters are cool. A Local Friend sits down with you at a table you would not have found, in a lane where nobody writes the menu down.
