Devi Road leaves the old town past temple after temple and runs north to Sheetla Devi Temple. Behind it, the lanes of old Mainpuri close in around the garhi, the fort-palace of the Chauhan rajas, still privately kept by the family. To the south, the newer market town spreads toward the railway station.
Beyond the lanes, the countryside takes over. Workshops press brass wire into wood for tarkashi trays and boxes, and wetlands toward Saman Bird Sanctuary hold tall grey sarus cranes. Summers are fierce, the monsoon soaks July to September, and winters stay cool and dry. A Local Friend can show you their own mohalla, from the corner shrine to the lane where they grew up.
