Morning queues form at the Biraja temple, where pilgrims file in for a two-armed goddess holding a demon by its tail. At midday the walk drifts down to Dashashwamedha Ghat on the Baitarani, where seven stone mothers sit side by side above the water. By evening the lanes glow around the Shubha Stambha, a tall carved pillar among homes and shops.
Beyond the temples, the hill of Ratnagiri holds the ruins of a Buddhist monastery and its giant stone Buddha heads. Summers are hot and humid, the monsoon soaks the town from July to October, and winters stay mild. When your list runs dry, a Local Friend picks the next stop, maybe a quiet shrine you would have missed.
