In the monsoon, the Hemavathi reservoir climbs until the Gothic arches of Shettihalli's ruined church stand in water. By the dry months the water pulls back, and you can walk inside its walls again. Around Deepavali, crowds fill the lanes of Hassan as the Hasanamba Temple opens its doors for a few days, then closes them for another year.
Beyond town, carved Hoysala temples wait in Belur and Halebidu, and a giant granite Bahubali looks out from a hilltop at Shravanabelagola. Winters are mild and dry, and rain arrives from June to October. A Local Friend keeps the plan loose, so a full dam or a festival day can still change the route.
