Trains on the Lucknow to Delhi line pull into Shahjahanpur station, and the town spreads out toward two rivers, the Garra and the Khannaut. Autos and rickshaws weave between the old mohallas and the leafy cantonment, watched by the giant red Hanuman of Hanumat Dham on its island at Visrat Ghat.
The town keeps its freedom fighters close, with memorials to Ram Prasad Bismil and Ashfaqulla Khan. On Holi, a mock British lord rides a buffalo cart through showers of color. Summers run hot, the monsoon arrives in June, and winters stay mild. A Local Friend keeps the plan loose, so a river walk can turn into a sweet-shop stop or a long chat on a ghat.
