Masquerades spin down the streets each December, when Carniriv fills Port Harcourt with a week of parades, floats and drums. A boat regatta draws crowds to the Tourist Beach, and later the Bole Festival throws a party for roasted plantain and fish.
Between festivals, life runs through Mile One Market, where stalls sell food, clothes and electronics, and New GRA, where bars and kitchens stay busy late. The climate is hot and wet, with heavy rain most of the year and a short, sunny dry season around Christmas. A Local Friend can lead you through doors you would never have tried, into a favorite bole spot or a courtyard full of friends.
