About this tip
The Jingzaijiao tile-paved salt fields in Beimen, founded in 1818, are the oldest surviving ones in Taiwan, with shallow pans lined with broken pottery shards. Aim for the hour before sunset, when the light hits the pans with Beimen Lagoon on the horizon. The spot draws photographers, so claim your angle early. It lies well north of the old town, so go by scooter, taxi or a coastal half-day trip, and try raking or collecting salt if the site offers it.
