About this tip
Where the Zengwen River meets the sea, Qigu Wetland is a gathering place for the black-faced spoonbill, an internationally protected bird that passes through in winter. The lagoon beside it is dotted with oyster rafts and fishing nets, and its mangrove edge shelters egrets and fiddler crabs. Go in the cooler months, bring binoculars and keep your distance from the birds. Qigu lies on the coast away from the old town, so go by car, scooter or a guided half-day trip, and finish with sunset from the Qigu View of the Sea Tower.
