Two rivers, one ink-dark and one the color of milky coffee, run side by side past Manaus for kilometers before they mix. Back in town the scale shrinks to a gourd of tacacá, its jambu leaves leaving your lips tingling, and to the painted tiles on the dome of the Teatro Amazonas.
Beyond the opera house, fish stalls fill the iron halls of the Mercado Adolpho Lisboa, and families head for the river sand at Ponta Negra at dusk. The air stays hot and humid all year, with heavy rain from December to May. A Local Friend can lead you to their own favorite stretch of riverbank and tell you why it matters to them.
