At low tide the sea off Pajuçara turns pale green and almost silent, and a jangada slides out under one tall sail. Past the breakers the reef opens into wide, still pools, and the city shrinks to a thin line of towers and palms. Out here there is only water, sky and the knock of hulls.
Back on shore, Jaraguá keeps old warehouses and museums near the port, and lacemakers in Pontal da Barra work filé at their doors beside the Mundaú lagoon. It stays warm all year, with most rain from April to August. A Local Friend can share the stretch of sand they grew up on and the story behind it.
