Surfboards lean against beach bars in the north of the island, while down south in Ribeirão da Ilha a fisherman checks his oyster lines below a whitewashed Azorean church. Both are Florianópolis. Downtown keeps its own pair of faces, with the white Hercílio Luz Bridge over the bay and the Mercado Público loud with fish stalls at lunch.
Away from the sand, lacemakers work wooden bobbins near Lagoa da Conceição, and families fill waterfront decks for oysters at sunset. Summers are hot and humid, winters mild and breezy, and rain falls in every season. A Local Friend knows when to reach a quiet beach early and when to stay on at a lagoon bar until the last light.
