Long-distance sleeper buses pull off Highway 3 in the Cầu River valley, and riders top up their motorbikes before the winding road to Ba Bể Lake. Those who stop find hotels that rent out motorbikes, local buses heading north and a lake about 70 km away.
Away from the main road, families stroll the riverside walking street on weekend evenings, where then singing drifts over the food stalls. At the market, bánh coóc mò come wrapped in banana leaf. Summers are hot and rainy, while winters turn cool and dry. A Local Friend keeps the plan loose, so a lake trip can turn into a village lunch or a long evening by the river.
