Auto drivers still name their stops after the gates of an old city wall, so a ride often ends at Hathi Pol, the Elephant Gate. Inside, lanes climb to the Jagdish Temple, in worship for centuries. The City Palace rises over Lake Pichola, part museum and part hotel, and the Gangaur procession still sets out from it each spring.
Farther out, families stroll beside Fateh Sagar Lake at dusk, and the Monsoon Palace watches from a hilltop to the west. Winter brings sunny days and cool nights, and the July monsoon turns the hills green. A Local Friend walks beside you through the lanes, letting you choose the turns and filling in the story of each gate.
