Each Poush, in the cool weeks around the new year, stalls and a book fair spread around Mulajore Kalibari, the riverside Kali temple that Tagore relatives founded on the Hooghly. Families come for the goddess and stay for the fair, browsing paperbacks until dusk. In autumn, Kali Puja lights the same grounds, and across the water Chandannagar dresses up for Jagaddhatri Puja.
Between festivals, Shyamnagar is a town of jute mills, commuter trains to Kolkata and ferries that cross to Telinipara all day. Summers are humid, rains are heavy from July to October, and winters stay mild and dry. A Local Friend can open a door you would not have knocked on, like a family puja in their own lane.
