Flat black-soil fields of the Balaghat plateau run to the horizon around the city. Then the scale shrinks. At Ganj Golai, a round market from around 1917, streets fan out like spokes from the small Ambabai temple at its center, each with its own trade, from chillies to jaggery.
Beyond the market, families stroll Nana Nani Park, and the Siddheshwar temple fills up for its Mahashivratri fair. Winters are mild and dry, summers fiercely hot, and the monsoon brings most rain from June to September. A Local Friend might walk you to their favorite corner of the Golai and tell you the story behind it.
