In late spring the fruit stalls turn orange with Kesar mangoes, a variety first planted in the foothills of Girnar and named, the story goes, after saffron. Hands shaped this city too. Inside Uparkot Fort, the Adi Kadi Vav stepwell was cut straight down into solid rock.
Beyond the fort, the onion domes of Mahabat Maqbara rise over the old city, and Sakkarbaug Zoo keeps Asiatic lions close to the center. Winters are dry and mild, and the monsoon soaks the hills from June to September. A Local Friend translates the snack boards, the bus routes and the local mood, so you know where to eat and when the Girnar steps are quietest.
