Marble cliffs rise straight out of the Narmada at Bhedaghat, and a rowboat drifting between them looks like a toy. Nearby, the river tumbles into Dhuandhar Falls in a cloud of spray. Back in town the scale shrinks to one boulder perched on another near Madan Mahal Fort, and to a dark, spongy khoya jalebi handed over the counter at Badkul.
Beyond the famous sights, regulars linger over coffee in Sadar, and evening lamps flicker over the river at Gwarighat. Summers turn hot, the monsoon soaks the city from July to September, and winters stay mild and clear. A Local Friend can take you to a favorite ghat or lane and tell you how it got its name.
