Hold a polished slice of Shajar stone up to the window and dark little trees appear inside the pale agate. Evening light plays a similar trick on the Ken River, where the brown walls of Bhuragarh Fort warm to copper as the sun drops.
Away from the river, a rocky hill in town holds the cave shrine of Bamdev, the sage said to have given Banda its name, and Kalinjar Fort crowns a Vindhya hill to the south. Summers are fierce, the monsoon soaks July and August, and dry winter days bring the softest light. A Local Friend knows when to reach Bhuragarh early and when to linger on its walls until the river turns gold.
