Families spread mats outside the Bandeshwar temple on jatra night, trading news with cousins home from Mumbai while a Dashavatar troupe tunes its harmonium. The show starts after midnight, and the chatting never quite stops. This is the last Maharashtra town on the road to Goa, and the temple courtyard is where everyone meets.
Beyond the temple, cashew traders weigh sacks from nearby villages, the Terekhol slides past the old fort hill, and Sawantwadi's lacquered wooden toys sit a short ride north. Monsoon rains soak the town from June to October, and the dry months after are mild and green. A Local Friend walks beside you through the lanes, stopping each time someone waves them over to talk.
