Saws bite into the frozen Songhua River each winter, and the clear blocks become the glowing walls of Ice and Snow World on the far bank. After the thaw, the same water carries ferries out to Sun Island, and evening strollers fill the riverside promenade.
Away from the river, Central Street runs on old cobbles, the green domes of Saint Sophia Cathedral rise nearby, and Laodaowai keeps its Chinese Baroque shophouses and bun counters. Winters are long, dry and bitterly cold, while short summers turn warm and bring most of the rain. A Local Friend can turn your scattered list into a day that makes sense, from cathedral square to riverbank to a basket of buns.
