Breakfast arrives in a steamer of mutton shaomai, each dumpling gathered at the top like a small pomegranate. By late morning the road climbs into the Yin Mountains, where the white halls of Wudangzhao step up a willow valley. At dusk, families stroll the open grass of Saihantala as the towers behind it light up.
Beyond those sights, Donghe keeps the older streets near the Yellow River, and the dunes of Resonant Sand Bay sing a short drive south. Summers bring warm days and cool nights, while winters are long, cold and very dry. When your plans run out, a Local Friend picks the next stop, maybe a walled Ming-era monastery you had never heard of.
