Purple light filters through the jacarandas in October, and whole streets turn violet under a deep Highveld sky. Up on Meintjieskop, the sandstone of the Union Buildings warms to honey in the late afternoon above the terraced gardens. Fallen blossoms carpet the pavements, so even a walk to the corner shop looks staged.
Away from the postcard streets, students fill the cafés of Hatfield, Church Square keeps the old center busy, and the Tswaing crater sits a short drive north. Summers bring hot afternoons and thunderstorms, while winters stay sunny and dry with cold nights. A Local Friend knows when to catch the gardens in soft morning light and when to stay on for sunset over the city.
