Gold and black shirts fill one side of FNB Stadium, black and white the other, and once the Soweto Derby kicks off the singing barely stops until the final whistle. Families crowd into the Rand Show at Easter, and on Saturdays a Braamfontein warehouse fills with food stalls and a rooftop crowd.
Beyond the stadium, Vilakazi Street in Soweto leads to the former homes of two Nobel Peace Prize winners, and Melville keeps its cafés and bars busy late. High on the Highveld, days are mostly sunny, with summer afternoon storms and dry, crisp winters. A Local Friend can open doors you would not knock on yourself, like Sunday lunch at home or a big match watched with the neighbors.
