A railway bridge on tall concrete legs loops over the Athi River three times, just to skirt the edge of town. It is the first of many small surprises here. A short drive out, giraffes and zebras wander Swara Plains, and the boulders of Lukenya turn into climbing walls.
Beyond the cement works and the Export Processing Zone, Athi River is a commuter town of new estates, busy matatu stages and roadside kitchens. On its high plain the air stays mild, with long rains from March to May and shorter rains late in the year. A Local Friend can pull up a chair for you at a family kitchen serving muthokoi, a table no map would lead you to.
