Morning light reaches the walls of Fort Jesus first, and by mid-morning the lanes of the Old Town fill with tuk-tuks, handcarts and shoppers ducking under carved wooden balconies. In the evening, families stroll along Mama Ngina Waterfront to watch ships and Likoni ferries cross the mouth of the harbor.
Off the island, long sandy beaches line the north coast, and Haller Park has turned an old quarry into green trails with hippos, tortoises and antelope. The air stays warm all year, and the heaviest rain falls in April and May. When your own list runs out, a Local Friend picks the next stop, maybe a beach, a fish lunch or a lane you walked past twice.
