      Aux Merveilleux de Fred

      • Paris, France
      • aux-merveilleux-de-fred
        Community

      Dear Frienders,

Though I am sharing with you this address, please be warned; once the fresh and hearty smell of the chocolate chip brioche hits you, your brain might stop to function for a moment. "Merveilleux" means Marvellous and they got that right. This place is non-pretentious yet set in an elegant decor. They only serve to-go and the staff is smiling and friendly. The Cramiques are a must, an updated version of the brioche. They only bake what they know which means your tastebuds are in good hands.

The signature sweet is a light heart of meringue smothered in various chocolate flavors. Dark chocolate, vanilla, pralines, berries... No one shall leave disappointed from Fred's. The smart move? Offering different sizes to suit every appetite: an baby Merveilleux to go and can fit in the palm of your hands to the family format for everyone to share.

Bonus: No back kitchen, the window showcases the Cramiques cooking process with discipline and love. The customers can observe how the food is prepared and enjoy a culinary visual delight.

How to eat a croissant like the French do

      Lifestyle Tip
Many times, when we are abroad, we want to follow the local's footstep and wish to appear knowledgeable about the cultural lifestyle. Therefore, we believe that the best way is the educated way. Not always.

When it comes to eating croissants in Paris, the fashion hub and elegant french capital, one would assume one needs to be proper and stylish when doing so. The truth is, you (really) don't. You want to have a food orgasm? The only way is to tear it apart with your barehands like it's the last remaining croissant on the planet. Get butter on your fingers, yes the crumbles will fall on the floor and you will make a mess and it's okay because you're doing it right.

Just make sure you grab a napkin for when the experience is over, you will want to get rid of the delicious grease that could testify of what just happened. This is your guilty pleasure and no one has to know.

From Le Notre's symmetry of nature's order to little chaos of Monet Gardens, you will see the passage of time & history in two masterpiece Gardens and the only civil work created by the military architect Vauban - the aqueduct built to provide water for the gardens and fountains of Versailles and never finished. You will enjoy the village of Giverny, an oasis of greenery, Monet's Gardens & House on the right bank of the Seine River in Normandy and the hidden jewel of Maintenon, an early fortress transformed into an aristocratic residence, with garden by Le Nôtre, the gardener of Versailles. He created here a magnificent landscape dominated by water, for Madame de Maintenon, the secret second wife of King Louis XIV, the Sun King. Last but not least, the famous aqueduct of Vauban, majestic, crossing the centuries and the Marquise' garden. The garden ''à la française'' was designed to represent harmony and order, the ideals of the Renaissance, and to recall the virtues of Ancient Rome.

      Don't: the Champs-Elysées

      • Paris, France
      • don-t-the-champs-elysees
        Community

      Dear Frienders,

I hate to be one to break it up to you but Parisians don't hang out on the Champs-Elysées. Ever. In fact, it's the first place we tend to avoid. The only reason I might go there is to shop at Sephora (one of the biggest in town). That's probably the biggest trap about our city.

It was once the place-to-be, my grandparents used to tell me how Parisians would dress up to take a stroll on the most beautiful avenue of the world as we (proudly) like to call it. I still take pride in it for the photographic angles it offers, the Christmas lights and of course our dear Arc de Triomphe.
I wouldn't recommend to go there just for a drink, you will pay twice perhaps three times more than what it's worth in a restless atmosphere due to the dense crowd of tourists but also from ill-intentioned souls. More tourists often means more thieves. Stay alert.

However, there are no Traps without Tips, one hidden gem remains on the Champs (Parisians never add "Elysées", we call it simply Les Champs, we've known each other all our lives no need for formality) with a beautiful courtyard and a vegetable wall: Flora Danica.
On the beginning of the avenue, left hand-side with the Arc behind you, look for the sea blue window and step inside a Scandinavian-inspired, serene decor, serving a fish-based menu with elegance. The perfect pit-stop after frantic hours of shopping.
Prices match the postcode but you will be served quality dishes.

Flora Danica: 142 Avenue des Champs-Elysées
