In winter, flocks of pink flamingos wade across the mudflats of Thane Creek. Come in the monsoon instead and the Yeoor Hills turn deep green, streams spill down the slopes and Upvan Lake brims. In August, Dahi Handi crowds pack the streets to watch human pyramids climb toward a clay pot hung high overhead.
Away from the lakes, plates of fiery misal pav come out early and the old Kopineshwar Mandir keeps a steady line of visitors. Winters here are dry and mild, and the heavy rains arrive in June. A Local Friend keeps the plan loose, ready to trade a lake walk for the creek when the weather turns.
