In late August the hills around Satara are soaked green, waterfalls pour off the Western Ghats, and Kaas Plateau fills with pink and yellow wildflowers. In January the same slopes turn gold and dry, and the walk up Ajinkyatara Fort ends with the whole town below you.
In town, the old Rajwada quarter remembers a Maratha capital, and sweet shops sell kandi pedha by the box. Sajjangad and Thoseghar Falls are a short ride away. The climate is tropical wet and dry, with heavy monsoon rain and mild winters. A Local Friend keeps the plan loose, so a misty morning at Kaas can turn into a sunny afternoon at the falls.
