Carved Jain temples sit between shopfronts in Ganjpara, and the pink gateway of Chandi Mandir rises a short walk from the railway station. The town's name simply means fort. Its Kalachuri walls have faded, yet the Marathas once ran their campaign across Chhattisgarh from this base, and the old wards still crowd close to the Shivnath.
Beyond the center, a promenade follows the river, pilgrims ride out to the Jain shrine at Nagpura, and Bhilai begins where Durg ends. Summers are fierce, the monsoon soaks July to September, and winter turns mild and dry. A Local Friend walks beside you at street level, pointing out which lane hides a temple and which kitchen still steams fara.
