Fishing boats strung with flags and flowers follow a statue of Saint Peter out of the fishermen's pier every June 29, and whole families ride along in their own boats. On shore, the stone bastions of Real Felipe Fortress look on.
Beyond the procession, murals cover old port mansions in Callao Monumental, and the seawall at La Punta faces the open Pacific. Small boats head out to the Palomino Islands, where thousands of sea lions lounge on the rocks. Summers are sunny and dry, while winter brings gray skies and a misty drizzle called garúa. A Local Friend opens doors you would not have knocked on, from a family kitchen in Chucuito to the pier where the catch comes in.
