Office workers walk to lunch underground in downtown Houston, through air-conditioned tunnels lined with food courts that link the towers overhead. Up at street level, the METRORail light rail glides down Main Street toward the museums, while cyclists and joggers follow Buffalo Bayou on trails that dip beneath the freeways.
Away from the center, Montrose fills old bungalows with vintage shops and galleries, and families crack open Viet-Cajun crawfish by the pound at long, messy tables. Summers are long, hot and humid, while winters stay short and mild. A Local Friend keeps the plan loose, so a bayou walk can stretch into sunset or end with a late plate of fajitas.
