Directions here come with a bit of history attached, like two blocks toward the lake from where a bank used to stand. The surprises keep coming. A crater lake called Tiscapa sits in the middle of town, the earthquake-hollowed Old Cathedral still wears its stone angels, and footprints left in ancient mud at Acahualinca stroll toward Lake Managua.
Away from the lakefront, people shop for hammocks, paintings and fresh pineapple at Mercado Roberto Huembes. The air stays hot all year, with a dry season from November to May and heavy rains after that. A Local Friend can pull up a chair for you at a family kitchen serving weekend nacatamal, the kind of table no map would show.
