Early in the morning, the paths of Volodymyrska Hill are nearly empty, and below them the Dnipro spreads wide and slow around wooded islands. In summer, Hydropark fills with swimmers and volleyball games, but on a cool weekday its sandy paths belong to a few walkers and anglers.
Beyond the viewpoints, the funicular drops to Podil, where cafés, markets and small theaters fill old merchant streets, and Andriivskyi Descent climbs back up past painters' stalls. Summers are warm and green, while winters are cold and often snowy. A Local Friend might lead you to a favorite courtyard in Podil and tell you who lived there a century ago.
