Woks clang and stall owners call out orders as the lunch crowd at a hawker centre trades English, Malay, Mandarin and Tamil across shared tables. By evening the sound turns to music, when the Supertree Grove beside Marina Bay lights up for its nightly show.
Away from the bay, Kampong Gelam mixes old shophouses with cafés, and Tiong Bahru keeps its prewar walk-up flats and morning market. The Botanic Gardens offer shady lawns and a huge orchid collection. Expect heat and humidity all year, with heavy showers that tend to arrive in the afternoon. A Local Friend opens doors you would not have knocked on, from a stall their family swears by to a shrine you would never have found.
