Zelkova trees arch over Jōzenji-dōri, where a leafy promenade runs past sculptures and the glass front of the Sendai Mediatheque. A few blocks south, the covered Ichibanchō arcades link into a long T of shops, and after dark the side streets of Kokubunchō fill with izakaya chatter. The grid still follows Date Masamune's castle-town plan.
Beyond downtown, the Hirose River curls past wooded banks, and Masamune rests in the gilded Zuihōden among tall cedars. Summers are warm and wet, winters cool and mostly dry. A Local Friend can show you their own neighborhood, down to the alley counter where they eat after work.
