Storm clouds build over Lake Victoria in the long wet season, and after each downpour the granite hills shine and the gardens turn deep green. From June to September the haze lifts and the islands in the gulf look close enough to touch. All year the lake sets the plan, from early ferries to grilled tilapia at dusk.
Beyond Bismarck Rock, a short boat ride reaches Saanane Island, and the Sukuma Museum keeps royal drums and dances alive east of town. The climate is tropical savanna, warm all year, with rain from October to May. A Local Friend keeps the plan loose, ready to trade a hike for a boat trip when clouds roll in.
